VOICES OF COURAGE

Myo Aung Htwe is a former student union leader of the 1988 'People To Power Uprising' and a prominent democracy activist from Myanmar.

In 1991 after the 88' uprising was bloodily crushed and the outcome of the general elections had been ignored by the military, My Aung was arrested and charged with high treason. He became the youngest political prisoner in Myanmar's history and was sentenced to death. While on death row, Myo Aung served 18 years in prison and was released in 2009 as Myanmar seemed to open up.

Since Myo Aung was fourteen years old, he fought against the military dictatorship in Myanmar, advocating for democracy, liberty and equality, promoting the rights of minorities in Myanmar and countering religious extremism and discrimination.

In 2011 My Aung co-founded the Yangon School of Political Science (YSPS) with other former political prisoners, which became the first independent university engaging in Myanmar's democratic transitioning process. At YSPS, he served  as a board member and programme manager eager to teach and support "progressive, democratically minded citizens who would help Myanmar to make the successful transition toward a sustainable democratic future."

Since the military violently regained power in the coup in February 2021, they issued arrest warrants for Myo Aung and other prominent democracy activists. Thus, Myo Aung was forced to leave his country. However, he still works persistently against the military dictatorship from outside Myanmar.
