VOICES OF COURAGE

Xiye Bastida is a climate activist and one of the main organizers of the Fridays for Future movement globally. She was born and grew up in San Pedro Tultepec, a small town outside of Mexico City which was in the past stricken by both - severe droughts and floods. Xiye belongs to the indigenous Otomi-Toltec nation in Mexico and was raised with the indigenous philosophy that water is not a resource but a sacred element and that "we all have to take care of the earth because the earth takes care of us". Both her parents are environmentalists who already participated in the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro when 154 nations signed the first framework agreement on climate change.

Xiye is a member of the administration committee of the "People's Climate Movement" and co-founded the not-for-profit Re-Earth Initiative, a youth-led organization that focuses on the intersectionality of the climate crisis. In 2018 she was invited to speak at the United Nations World Urban Forum about the indigenous philosophy and knowledge she was raised with. She received the "Spirit of the UN" award and in 2021 the Vital Voices Award. Xiye is now a student at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in environmental studies with a focus on policy and implementation.

Xiye Bastida wrote the opening chapter for the book "All We Can Save - Truth, Courage and Solutions for the Climate Crisis" - a collection of essays and poetry - by A. E. Johnson and  K. Wilkinson.
