VOICES OF COURAGE

Srđa Popović is a well-known civil rights activist from Belgrade, Serbia. In 1998 Srdja and his friends founded the iconic nonviolent resistance group Otpor (Resistance) which became a nationwide movement that helped to topple the regime of Slobodan Milosevic in 2000. After the revolution, Srdja served a term as a member of the new Serbian National Assembly and worked as an environmental advisor to the newly elected prime minister Zoran Đinđić

In 2003 Srdja and his friends founded and established the Centre for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies CANVAS which is dedicated to spreading the knowledge of how to start a peaceful revolution using the strategies and the knowledge of Otpor. Srdja became the Executive Director of CANVAS and since has trained activists from around the globe, including Iran, Venezuela, Myanmar, Egypt and Zimbabwe.

In October 2017, Srdja was elected by the students as Rector of the University of St. Andrews in Scottland. Over the years Srdja has taught numerous courses on non-violent strategies for political change at Harvard University, John Hopkins University, Belgrade University and other universities.

In his humourous and compelling book "Blueprint for Revolution: How to Use Rice Pudding, Lego Men and Other Non-Violent Techniques to Galvanise Communities, Overthrow Dictators or Simply Change the World" he is sharing on a personal account the knowledge and the practice of peaceful protest of Otpor with the public. In 2012 Srdja was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2020 he was awarded the Brown Democracy Medal for his work.
